Navigating the Tension Between Action and Acceptance

Updated: Mar 26

As Thanksgiving draws near, it's a time for us to reflect on what we're thankful for. Personally, I feel a deep sense of gratitude for all the experiences, both good and hard, that life has thrown my way. I often ponder the delicate balance between taking control of my life and embracing the unknown. While struggling to shape my career and personal life, I often encountered situations where I had limited control over my ability to advance my career, achieve significant milestones, or pursue goals such as relationships or my health. Despite the challenges, I strive to embark on these enthusiastically, pushing myself to achieve my objectives while acknowledging that many outcomes are beyond my control. Specifically, the challenging experiences have taught me to be resilient and adaptable; I am genuinely thankful for that and trust that the universe will guide me on this journey.

"Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don't resist them; that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally forward in whatever way they like." - The Tao Te Ching.

Embracing Uncertainty: Finding Peace in Life's Unpredictable Journey

I am grateful to have learned an important lesson about life and career: many aspects are beyond my control. The idea of control can be captivating, but it is ultimately misleading. A cognitive bias makes us believe we can influence events and outcomes more than possible. This bias can lead us to overestimate our ability to control situations, from personal achievements to random events. This illusion is rooted in a deep-seated need for predictability and stability, and it can be both comforting and deceptive. While it can create a sense of empowerment and drive, it also sets us up for frustration and disappointment when reality doesn’t bend to our will.

It is crucial to recognize this illusion, as it encourages a more realistic approach to life. Acceptance and adaptability become key. By understanding the limits of our control, we can focus our efforts and intentions on what is within our reach rather than fixating on outcomes beyond our influence. This leads to a more balanced and fulfilling experience in life. Attempting to control uncontrollable things can be overwhelming and often leads to frustration. Instead of trying to control everything, I remind myself to be grateful for life's unpredictability and its unique lessons. Although challenging, following this path will lead me to greater understanding and peace.

"Peace requires us to surrender our illusions of control." - Jack Kornfield

Embracing the Balance: Action and Surrender

I am grateful that throughout my journey, I have learned a valuable but challenging lesson: the importance of proactively pursuing my goals while accepting that the outcomes are often beyond my control. This apparent dichotomy requires a delicate balance between honing my skills and taking the concept of surrender. I must admit this challenge is filled with moments of uncertainty and learning. Committing to my goals with intention while learning to let go of specific outcomes is a practice that continually tests and rewards me. It requires constant vigilance and adaptation but brings a more profound sense of peace and fulfillment.

"Do not let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do." - John Wooden.

Many of us may have experienced this. How do we balance acting and accepting things as they are? Have you developed tactics to help you embrace life and a career outside your control?

This Thanksgiving, I am grateful for the support and wisdom we share. Wishing everyone a holiday filled with reflection, gratitude, and peace.
